The Long Road to Medicine

Demystifying pre-medicine for students forging their own paths.

Our Purpose

Mentorship within academic and scholarly spaces can sometimes be hard to access or costly. It often relies on networks, insider knowledge, and opportunities that many students do not have. For those unfamiliar with the field of medicine, this might feel like a disadvantage even before they begin. I started this blog to shift that notion.

I approach mentorship with an anti-mentor philosophy. I believe that widespread access to knowledge and resources eliminates the need for traditional mentors. My blog reflects this belief by avoiding gatekeeping or polished advice that overlooks my setbacks, failures, and mistakes. I offer straightforward, experience-based guidance for students passionate about STEM, especially those who are underprivileged and lack a clear pathway.

What We Cover

I focus on the most challenging aspects of the premed path that are tough to navigate alone. This includes research, finding opportunities, making connections and turning experiences into meaningful progress. I also cover coursework, extracurriculars, and application processes through a practical lens. You do not need to have everything figured out, as I provide the necessary information, strategies, and perspectives that may be missing elsewhere. In return, I ask for intellectual curiosity, initiative, high drive, and a willingness to learn, which are all indispensable qualities. My mentees have gone on to study at Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Michigan, and University of Virginia.

Bloggers

While this blog reflects my personal perspective, it is undeniably based on shared experiences. I highlight mentors by featuring friends, colleagues, and trainees in science and medicine who have taken different paths and are open to sharing their insights.
